LEARN ABOUT STRATEGIES FOR SLOWING TRAFFIC & PED/BIKE SAFETY

Is it safe to walk or bike in your area? What actions can community members take to
reduce speeds? What physical improvements can be made to encourage a safer
neighborhood? The public is encouraged to join us for a discussion of these topics
with two City leaders on the issue. Eric Thompson, the City's Bicycle and Pedestrian
Coordinator; and Alice Tibbetts, of Biking and Walking Solutions will present
strategies to calm traffic in your neighborhood.

Join us for a free workshop on Tuesday, August 24th at 7:00pm at Immanuel Lutheran
Church, located at Snelling and Lincoln Avenues, across from Macalester College. Open
to anyone interested. For more information, call Bob Spaulding, Community
Organizer/Executive Director at 651-695-4000.

LAWN-SIGN CAMPAIGN TO HELP ENCOURAGE SLOW TRAFFIC

All of us have thought to ourselves, I wish that driver would slow down. We are
concerned for good reason. Pedestrian-auto collisions are over EIGHT TIMES more
likely to be fatal at 30 mph than at 20 mph.

The Community Council has launched its "Drive 25" campaign to slow traffic on
neighborhood streets. At the centerpiece of the campaign is a bright yellow lawn
sign, reminding people to slow down. The campaign is particularly intended to slow
traffic on neighborhood side streets, but signs can be put to use anywhere in the
neighborhood.

Signs can be purchased at the Macalester-Groveland office, 320 S. Griggs St; St Paul,
MN 55105, generally open between 9am and 5pm M-F, or you can mail a check made out to
Macalester-Groveland Community Council to our office for $5/sign, and we'll deliver
and install the sign for you (if you are in the Mac-Groveland area). Call
651-695-4000 if you need additional assistance, or visit us online at
http://www.macgrove.org/council/issues/Drive25.htm.

LOCK THOSE GARAGE DOORS!

As you wind up the summer gardening season and move into fall clean-up, please
remember to close and lock garage doors. There have been an abundance of garage
burglaries in the neighborhood, and in 80% of these incidences, garage doors were open
or unlocked. Follow these tips to help reduce burglaries and other crimes:

1. Always lock all doors and windows even if you're home.
2. Report any suspicious behavior or loitering by calling 9-1-1.
3. Maintain adequate lighting, especially at vulnerable entry points.
4. Always keep garage doors locked.
4. Don't leave ladders, snow shovels and tools lying outside where burglars can use
them to enter your home.
5. Know your neighbors! This summer, watchful neighbors helped catch a burglar
immediately. If you don't know who your block leader is or would like to start a
block club, call the community council at 651-695-4000.

Have a safe and happy fall! For questions please call Caitlin Reid, Crime Prevention
Coordinator at 651-695-4000 or by email at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

FALL PLANT SHARE

You may not want to believe it, but the end of the season is approaching! If you want
to update, change or add to your garden, stop by the Beautification Committee's Annual
Fall Plant Share on September 25th. Residents are invited to come and share their
extra, healthy, divided perennials in exchange for plants from a neighbor's garden.

Don't have any plants to share? New gardeners are welcome to stop by and pick up some
plants for a suggested donation of $1. The donations benefit the community council's
Beautification Committee, which plans the Spring and Fall Plant Shares, the Alley
Garden Awards and other community beautification efforts. Master Gardeners will be on
hand to answer questions.
The plant share is Saturday, September 25, 2004 from 10 am - noon. There will be one
location at 1990 Juliet Avenue.

Please call 651-695-4000 or visit www.macgrove.org with any questions you may have
about the Spring Plant Share. The Beautification Committee meets once monthly from
March through October and is looking for new members who are interested in deterring
crime through beauty.
