Why not ask: 1) Which institution is most likely to find a cure for cancer? 2) Which institution is responsible for making Minnesota a world leader in the medical device field? 3) Which institution is most likely to have a Nobel prize winner connected with it? 4) Which institution is committed to educating students from a range of backgrounds in a wide variety of fields? One could go on and on. The point is not to denigrate Carlton which, as we all know, is a fine institution. It also has a completely different mission than the U. Does anyone really think Minnesota should do away with the U in favor of more small, liberal arts undergraduate colleges. The comparison is absurd. > 2) Where is a reader most likely to find the book > they are looking for? Amazon.com or the public > library? Another absurd comparison. Will Amazon lend you books without charge? And, Amazon will also not have an archive of older books. Some things you can't get at Amazon will be at the library. The library may not have every book currently in print. Guess what, neither does Amazon. > > 3) Which mode of transportation gives the user the > most freedom to go exactly where they want, when > they want? A private car or a city bus whose route > and schedule is set by someone else? Another piece of nonsense. Not everyone owns a car and you can only use a car where the public has provided a roadway. Public vs. private is not an either or proposition. There are useful spheres for both.
