University UNITED, the Lexington Hamline Community Council and numerous other community organizations continue to advocate for transit-oriented development for Lexington and University, where Wellington Management is working on a major development. We have filed an appeal to the City Council of the Planning Commission's approvals of a lot split for the site and the site plan for Aldi's grocery store. A public hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, October 6th. The proposed project does not meet most TOD guidelines. (For more info, see our web page. In addition, we will be participating in a major community meeting on TOD on Monday, October 4 at 7:00 PM - more details to come later.) The Draft 2030 Transportation Policy Plan of the Metropolitan Council, excerpted in today's Star Tribune, recommends "Encouraging mixed-use development along transportation corridors that better link housing, jobs, and amenities, and reduce the need for single-destination trips." That is what this campaign is all about. We continue to meet with Wellington, elected officials, and others, in the hope that the project can be revised sufficiently to meet the community vision and TOD guidelines.
