Responding to Repke's note on party registration:

No, I don't think party registration is a good idea. Though I normally affiliate with the democrats, I don't uniformly think they choose the best candidates. For example, the school board race (which is nonpartisan, so maybe it isn't an issue) I often cast a vote for three out of four of possible candidates. Even though I have the right to choose another, it makes no sense to vote for them if I don't believe they were a good choice.

I have been active with the party, serving as an officer in my previous senate district. However, when we stick too close to party doctrines, rather than choosing the best candidates, we end up with so-so leaders and lukewarm support for them and turnouts approaching 15% rather than a respectable 60% plus.
