Just a thought on the "tobacco lobbyist issue." Most of us tend to believe on first
blush the things that we hear from people we trust. Agreed? So, follow me. If the
person you hired to lobby for you said that something bad would happen to you if a new
law passed would you believe them? Pretty darn likely, agreed? So, hunt through the
state roster of those who are registered lobbyists for a tobacco concern and find one
who doesn't also lobby for either liquor or gaming. I think you would find that the
guys/gals who take on tobacco as a client all have other clients in the booze/gaming
business. So, when lobbyist Smith (who I know as the lobbyist for Miller beer) comes
to my bar and says the smoking ban will kill my bar, I'm going to pretty much buy that
as the truth. I am not going to bother to ask him who he is speaking for and find out
he also has a contract for Philip Morris. He's my pal, I trust him. Even if he tells
me on the up front, I believe him, I trust him.  Lobbying is about trust, not bribes;
trust me. :)
