Uncharacteristic modesty :-) prevents Joe from detailing his work in education for many years. Presently director of the Center for School Change at the Humphrey Institute, Nathan is the author of several books on K-12 reform, including one of the first books on school choice which may have played a big role in charter school development in Minnesota and did play a major part in PSEO - Post-Secondary Education Options - the collaborative with higher education institutions created under the late Gov. Rudy Perpich allowing high school students to take college courses while still working on their diplomas, thus giving some students a leg up on entering college.
Still, Joe is an influential educator who was in on the earliest days of St. Paul's Open School and has been a major part of the "small schools within schools" initiative to address the deleterious effects of mass education in the public schools. (I make no judgments in any of this; he and I agree on some but not on all aspects of his policy initiatives). I have lived in St. Paul for more than 30 years, and have been a local PTA president, a member of the state board of the PTA, a teacher and administrator in St. Paul, and parent of 3 young people, all of whom attended St. Paul public schools kg - 12th grade.
