I find lists like this to be "culturally informative" about our city, not to mention, an opportunity for a little fun on our list.
I've not identified who likes or dislikes what, which means that contradictory opinions might appear on the same list (as in real life).
--------------------------------------
What I Like (or liked) About St. Paul:
--------------------------------------
* the well-kept historic buildings in downtown
* small businesses
* more progressive council
* Lori's coffee house
* Cahoots coffee house
* Taste of Thailand
* Artists' Quarter (but not the smoke)
* I hate the disrepair of the roads all over
the city. We are paying taxes for upkeep
* I love downtown and wish there would be a quaint
shopping area much like Grand Avenue, except with
free parking.
* I love the classic car cruising on University in
the summer and fall.
* The new Mai Village Restaurant on University and
Western is just an awesome space and an enjoyable
place to come together with friends for good food.
* I love the restaurants in the small town diner tradition
like the Copper Dome on Randolph, the Coffee Cup on
Rice and Arlington, Keys Restaurants on 10th and
Robert and Larpenteur and Lexington.
* I think the Minnesota History Center is a jewel as is
the New Science Museum and the Children's Museum.
* I love the Fitzgerald Theatre and would love to
see more events held there as well.
* The Catholic Pipeline. Baptized at St Luke, K-2 at
Nativity, 3-8 at St Mark's, 9-12 at Cretin, BA Summa
in 3 years from College of St Thomas. Thousands of
other St Paul boys and girls followed similar tracks,
although the fairer sex separated to Our Lady of Peace
or Derham or Vis and on to St Kates while the boys could
opt for St Thomas Academy if Cretin was too blue collar
for 'em. And most of us intermarried.
* Touch Footie on the islands of Summit or the lawn in front
of O'Shaunessy Library or Magnus Hall.
* Carp fishing at sewer outlet under Lake Street Bridge...
rickety old Lake Street Bridge which would shudder
disconcertingly when a bus came over and had rotting
wooden planks (those that weren't missing) for a
walk/bike path.
* Keggers below Goodrich or Fairmont or Jefferson. How no
teens fell to their deaths off those precarious places,
I cannot fathom.
* Keggers at Crosby, way back in the woods, before it became
a yuppie jogging path.
* Lee Lenore's Sauna on Randolph and Snelling above a
laundromat, with the motto, "Entrance in Rear."
Always good for a giggle.
* May Day Procession in honor of the Virgin Mary down Summit
to the Cathedral. Nothing Commie about it.
* Nice, twisty tangletowns, nice straight avenues. NO 4-WAY
STOPS like those poor saps in Mpls had.
* The mystery of Hidden Falls (not anymore a mystery) and
Shadow Falls (still pretty much undiscovered)
* The original Carbone's on Randolph. They put a dollop of
butter atop the generous mozzarella. -- #1 Date spot
....after catching a flick at the Highland or Grandview.
* Abundant ditch weed which inspired many a placebo high.
* Grade School Days at the Highland, Phalen, Como golf
courses. $1 if you teed off before 7:00 and stayed
the hell ahead of the real $5 paying customers.------------------------------
What I Dislike About St. Paul:
------------------------------
* Lawson software deal
* GSE
* Kelly
* WalMart on University Av
* 640 billboards
* chain stores
* I generally like the police force and think
we have it all over the Minneapolis Police.
* I like the small town feel of Saint Paul.
* I love our green space.
* Our museums.
* Our free zoo - in Como Park, and I love the bike
trails that we are starting to develop more.
* What I dislike right now in Saint Paul is that the
street illegal motorized scooters that are not street
or sidewalk legal in Saint Paul are driving us
crazy in our neighborhood in the Como Park neighborhood
in the Wheelock/Dale area. They are noisy, not unlike
a leaf blower being ridden down the street, full throttle.------------------------
What I Want In St. Paul:
------------------------
* Transit!! Better, more frequent, more accessible transit
- convenient, clean, reasonably priced and headed in
every direction I want to go.
* Maybe just have free parking on the street (in downtown) on
Saturdays and Sundays.
* I would like to see the historic trolley shuttle
folks from areas like Rice and University downtown
to the farmers market, and from Grand Avenue to West
7th and to downtown.
* I would love to see a multiple movie theatre in the
Midway area, say at the old vacated Mervyns store
across from Herbergers.
* I would love to see a PRT or Taxi 2000 that would run
between the campuses in Saint Paul.
* I would like to continue to see more new businesses
move to the North End in the Rice Street Area, as
well as continue to spruce up University Avenue.
* I would like to see the old Landmark brewery restored
as an historic place by making it into another great
quaint hotel and or condo and retail space, with the
old brewhouse being turned into a great bar and grill
with micro brews and great food to accompany it.------------------------------------------------
