The county sheriff is going to be MORE accountable if appointed
by the board?  I think that kind of idea is usually called nonsense.

You'd have difficulty getting any board to fire an appointed official
such as a sheriff - it's messy and expensive in the best of
circumstances.  You are also not going to get agreement from them to
do it unless the appointee has committed some heinous act - like getting
caught eating their young (again).

You think a board appointment is better?  Look at the troubles 
the Minneapolis Park Board is having.  How about the Lake Elmo
city council - didn't they appoint a sex offender as their city
manager last year?

If you don't like Fletcher, run against him or at least vote
against him but don't pervert a direct election system just because
he's got a strong following.  Why, that would be like trying to
recall a popular Mayor because you don't like his politics.

There's always term limits.
