It looks like people want real services from their government, even if
it costs more. Shocker.

-----------
Metro-area drivers will find snowplows out in full force this winter.

The Minnesota Transportation Department is returning to two long shifts
for its drivers to send more plows onto metro freeways when they're
needed most.

In addition, 100 new drivers were hired this year to fill positions
that had been vacant. About 1,600 state employees will operate about
800 plows on Minnesota roads, officials said.

Last winter, in an experiment to reduce plowing costs, the state
assigned plow drivers to work eight hours at a time, with three shifts
instead of two per day. The change reduced the number of snowplows
during storms and led to complaints that roads weren't being cleared
fast enough.

Driving should be a fair bit easier this winter.
