A space for learning
With up to 1,000 Hmong children arriving from a Thailand refugee camp, the school board acts to add two locations for kids with little or no classroom experience. With the Wat Tham Krabok refugee camp in Thailand closing at the end of December, the St. Paul public schools will be ready with more classrooms for incoming Hmong students.

Editorial: 60 years later, this honor points to a hard truth
Induction into the National Honor Society on Wednesday won't erase the bigotry Buelah Baines Swan experienced 60 years ago. A former teacher told Swan, 77, that high school administrators who didn't want a black high school student as that year's Washington High School valedictorian had deliberately dropped her class rank. For some unenlightened educators, Swan's skin color spoke far more clearly than her ability, potential and remarkable intelligence.

St. Paul expands help for Hmong
Almost half of the 15,000 Hmong people leaving a Thai refugee camp for the United States have made their way to their new homes in Minnesota, Wisconsin and California. The influx of 5,000 of those refugees to Minnesota has meant big changes for the St. Paul School District. The district has not only welcomed new students but also helped prepare other school districts that have not traditionally had large numbers of Hmong students.

Art education program uses the real thing
Roseville students study the work of a Southern artist, then share knowledge with younger peers. Roseville sixth-grader Alyssa Favilla can tell you just about anything you would want to know about Clementine Hunter, a self-taught African-American artist who used paint to tell stories about life on a Louisiana plantation in the 1900s.

Vandals strike new UMD science building
Officials say damage at yet-to-open facility tops $1 million. DULUTH, Minn. - Vandals caused more than $1 million in damage to the University of Minnesota-Duluth's new science building over the weekend. "Walking through the building this morning was sickening," said James Riehl, dean of UMD's College of Science and Engineering. "It's a terrible day for UMD that somebody would spend so much effort to destroy this brand-new building before we even got into it."

Letter to the Editor: Evolution is a fact
Evolution is a fact, not just a theory. If we just open our eyes, we can see evolution in progress. Plants that yield more food or fiber, cows that produce much more milk than a few years ago. Some of this has the involvement of humans; others do not. Evolution is nature's way of adaptation of any species, plant or animal.

Letters to the Editor: Teaching creationism
It seems to me that teaching creationism in a science class makes as much sense as teaching band in an economoics course.

U lab set to test structure's mettle
It looks like a cross between an Erector set and a Lego board, but its purpose is all business: a three-story lab that can twist, compress and stretch the strongest of steel girders and concrete piers to the breaking point and beyond.
