Roger that, Erickson. Compilation to follow holiday. Already replete with
ideas! Great response so far. Should stress that Friday and Saturday
nights are of special interest. Am following up with What's Up?, esp
w.r.t. St. Paul. Will continue with MMAA (it's just that the cafeteria is
lame compared to the Patio, but I suppose teenagers aren't as snobby as
me...) and pursue group (evening) event with SMM. MIA is at the top of the
list. The new ice rink downtown will be fun, but one of my kids can't even
ride a bike, never mind skate. Let's hope they will have Das Boot Hockey
Night at Landmark Platz...
Without getting too carried away (there's cheesecake to be made and wine to
be supped this afternoon), let me just say that on the Hamline U campus is
a two-year-old school called Nacel International School. I learned about
it here on this Forum, when someone was looking for Host Families. Fifty
9th to 12th graders from 20 countries (including 5 from the USA) attend.
Until now they have been content to deal with turning strangers into
friends, but now they have reached a point where they need more stimuli.
What I think is a great idea for them to do is usually met tentatively, but
once they've done it, they are glad, or at least I think they will be 10
years from now. I try my best at subliminal suggestion, but that is not
always successful.
The school has put on several events for them, including a trip to Mystery
Cave SP and another to a YMCA Team-Building place west of here. They are
holding Int'l Film Night every month or so, but that's at school which
isn't quite the same as "going out." Is there a funky film place in St.
Paul? I'm not opposed to cinema, but too much Hollywood is not what I want
for them.
BTW, we have a 17-year-old Bavarian (Franconian) and an 18-year-old
Uruguayan, a girl and a woman, not necessarily in that order.
I will have to work on my delivery of How To Dress Like A Minnesotan, and
to try to teach them that 6 layers of clothing is only effective if you're
belly isn't exposed to the elements. Speaking of factory tours, too bad I
couldn't send them to the Munsingwear Factory for an education on
insulation... I did have Wild tickets, but... There is the Swarm coming,
but athletics is not a top priority for these kids. I seemed to remember a
Club Cancun or some dry teen bar on the East Side, but as I recall I was
too afraid to go there myself, let alone send two relatively innocent young
ladies in there. But an X-free disco is what I think I'm looking for... I
will be dropping them off at Block E some night and have them take the
train to Fort Snelling for pick-up. (Tangent of their use of their free
bus passes avoided here...)
I'm gobbling now so will sign off...
I give thanks to you all, and for what peace and tranquility we have left
in this world. I mean, in St. Paul.
Over and out.

AM for teenagers
Andrew:
Please, post a list of any responses that you get - in the form of a
handy teenage activity list - to this forum. I'm sure that others
might find this information useful.
I hope that others post ideas to this list:
-------------------------------------------
I used to roller skate a lot as a teenager. Not sure if that's still
popular. Is the Dome Stadium still open for roller blading? (oops
Mpls)
The Roseville Ice Oval is a great place to ice skate - kids from
warmer regions might find that an interesting experience.
I'm very interested in whether or not you turn up any good
music/poetry/arts venues that cater towards teenagers. If you find
anything, please share.
Ride the Light Rail - sometimes I do that for fun :-) (oops Mpls again)
--------------------------------------------
Andrew, can you tell us anything about the nature of your needing to
entertain up to 50 international teenagers?
Sounds like enough kids to plan your own interesting events or
partner with a local high school for social/cultural activities.
Sounds interesting.
