Rafael Ortega is an interesting addition.
I'm not all that fond of him, but to keep it in perspective he inherited a view of the job from Ruby Hunt that was, simply, very aloof. Rafael has at least made a point of getting out in the neighborhood and meeting people, which is a big plus. I won't say he's redefined the job, but he's helped change it. That's a plus.
Rafael is smart and ambitious. Those are good qualities to start with in a mayor, IMHO. I have had big disagreements with him on his key issue, transit, but I do realize that his heart is in the right place. Will he be able to put his ego aside and listen to the neighborhoods? That's the question to me. Transit has to serve US, first and foremost.
I welcome Rafael to the race, he's a good addition. He will, at the very least, raise some good questions. I also think he will be able to connect on a more real level with what's going on in Saint Paul.
His dedication is obvious, but so is his ambition. His intelligence is there for all to see. I expect great things from him, and wait to see what he really brings to the table.
