Margaret:

Please tell me that ylou are not thinking of settling for this pultry amount.
This is ludicrous. For one thing, you will never all get moved out of your
homes with any money to purchase another home. Secondly, Ramsey County has not
changed their ways of composting. I think that the County should be forced to
go with a facility that Dakota County has at the minimum. This cash settlement
will never pay for the additionals costs you have had medically and replace
your homes and your future costs.

Please tell me Hill has something more up his sleeve. This is worrying me, for
your sakes.

Compost dispute settlement delayed

A last-minute glitch Friday postponed a court hearing that was expected to
settle a long-running lawsuit over a Maplewood composting site.

The proposed settlement involves a total of $415,000 from Ramsey County that
would be shared by the 11 households — including 47 individuals — involved in
the lawsuit, said Darwin Lookingbill, assistant Ramsey County attorney.

The families live near a compost site just south of Beam Avenue near U.S. 61
that the county had operated. The site opened in 1984; operations ended there
in 2000.

The neighbors complained that airborne bacteria and mold wafting from the
compost site caused them a variety of health problems, including asthma and
miscarriages.

Friday's hearing with county District Judge John VanDeNorth was postponed after
a disagreement between the county and an insurance company over attorneys' fees
that the county wanted covered in the settlement. Also, four of the 47
plaintiffs have moved out of the area and have not been found to sign off on
the settlement, Lookingbill said.

The hearing will likely be rescheduled for this month.
