I highly recommend that everyone in St. Paul pay attention to the budget situation at the school district. AFSCME workers are not the only ones who have something to be worried about. We all do.

Keep in the mind, the budget is set by the legislature - the school board is simply stuck with the frustrating job of dividing up what they get.

The articles below are helpful in understanding the scope of the problem.

St. Paul schools confront a huge shortfall
http://www.startribune.com/stories/462/5113049.html

"There was no desire to hem and haw and stall, so St. Paul schools Superintendent Patricia Harvey got right to the bad news Tuesday night: a bone-chilling, job-threatening, potentially progress-thwarting $24.3 million budget deficit for 2005-06.

And the news went over with the St. Paul school board, meeting in committee, like a Code Red terror alert."

Budget gap shocks

$24.3 million projected deficit exceeds school board's expectations
http://www.twincities.com/mld/twincities/living/education/10308545.htm

"The St. Paul public schools are looking at a projected $24.3 million budget deficit for next school year, providing challenges that Superintendent Pat Harvey said "are unlike any I've ever seen."

While the deficit isn't a surprise, the size of it caught the attention of school board members when they heard about it Tuesday night at a committee meeting. The $24.3 million is equal to almost 6 percent of the district's current general fund budget. Harvey didn't lay out ideas about where the cuts will come from, but that task is expected to start in earnest in coming weeks."

"On Tuesday, Nov. 30, Superintendent Patricia Harvey told the Saint Paul Board of Education that the school district is facing a budget challenge unlike anything she's ever seen for the 2005-06 school year.

According to information recently compiled by the district's Office of Business and Financial Affairs, Saint Paul Public Schools will face a $24.3 million budget deficit if current levels of state education funding remain the same."
