I believe one of the very saddest things about our current society as a whole
is that we have lost the notion of forgiveness. While we all want that
option for ourselves, we dole it out pretty sparingly to others. I believe
that those who transgress (regardless of the size of transgression) owe
those affected 1) a true, complete confession 2) an appology 3) making amends
4) accepting the punishment without whining or complaining and 5) fixing
what is broken.

As I have worked with men who have harmed their loved ones almost beyond
description, with men who have killed or maimed others, and with those who
have acted in ways that make their community less safe and livable, I have
found that this formula gives guidance.

The forgiveness piece comes as a gift from others, a gift that heals and makes
us all whole. Without the forgiveness, the transgressor can certaily
move forward, but the rest of us remain behind in our hate, distrust, anger and
the self absorbed certainty that we are right and superior.
