Bringing the discussion back to the local scene, one of the best organizations
I've found that is looking at how to plan for a mixed use corridor along
University Avenue (including the Midway shopping centers) is University United
www.universityunited.com. Generalities about any particular chain store are
not really useful unless you deal with the diverse needs of the area.
University United has been working with the neighborhood associations and
business organizations that abut University Avenue, in an attempt to come up
with an integrated plan for commercial and residential development along the
proposed light rail corridor joining downtown Minneapolis and St Paul. One of
the areas they are focussing on in particular is the three adjacent, separately
owned Midway shopping centers. For anyone who is interested, I encourage you
to go to their website and check it out -- www.universityunited.com. I am also
sending them an e-mail, encouraging them to post an update on their planning
for the Midway on this list serve.

I'm also interested in knowing if there are other groups or organizations that
are working on plans for the Midway. If we do get light rail or high speed bus
service along University, I think this provides a great opportunity to focus
public attention on the need for planned development along this corridor.
