I had two thoughts while out around the 'hood the other night:
1) Xcel is a lot more than hockey -- it's also concerts and events like the Boat Show we just had. I would guess that 4-5 times as many people come for concerts as come for hockey, for example.
2) The "free market" is far from perfect. I knew many years ago that West Seventh would be a good place for an entertainment district -- without any kind of arena. Would anyone every plunk down money on that without the big, highly visible public investment down the street? Would a bank loan them money? I think a lot of these projects work not because they really were a good idea, but because just about any kind of public investment in a 'hood makes it "safe". There's a lot of pressure to put interesting things everywhere.
So with those two, I think that the most important thing we can do is to make a fairly large splash re-investing in places like the Orpheum and some others, creating smaller venues for other performers.
