Welcome to the land of sky blue waters, James - the Saudi Arabia of H2O.

And congratulations on unlocking the Hidden Meaning of the Day! Why should
a German bar stock English beer indeed! Why should I be a member of the
NAACP or Daughters of the British Empire (DBE)? Why should motors be
allowed in the BWCAW? As we learned on Sesame Street, some things just
don't belong.

This is as absurdist's way of tackling the Exclusivity/Diversity/Racist
issues facing Sao Paolo today. I read Black Like Me, twice, and I may
never have posted my 2005 Winter Carnival Parade experience, but I was the
internal organs of a very large, exclusively Czech puppet. Call me a
cultural cross-dresser, on a mission to experience and understand what it
means to be unique and minor. It's boring being a Wonder Bread man in St.
Paul's bakery so I like to toast others. I like to visit my Dutch friend's
house and walk a mile in his clogs; to visit my gay, married friends (one's
white as snow and the other black as coal!) and talk about hair; to go to
Augusta National and pretend I'm a black woman; (OK, I haven't done that
yet); to march in the Cinco de Mayo Parade and sing "Vaya Con Dios" and
stuff; hang with local Persians and Kurds to try to learn how they deal
with extreme heat; ... the list goes on...

I haven't really given this too much thought so I'd be unclear if I carried
on. But I would just like people to think about cultural "purity" and
"exclusivity." They aren't necessarily evil or racist or even rude.
Certainly not when you are welcome to observe the culture, if not
participate fully in it.

Hmmm...St. Paul issues like this are the reason humans are meant to live
longer than 42 years, at least in this millenium. Anyone who says they've
got it all figured out is full of it. Personally, I don't trust anyone
under 95.

Hi,
I am a little belated with this response from the
listserv manager, but my name is James Lockwood, and I
joined last week.

Originally from TN, I have been in St. Paul for nearly
five years, first renting in downtown and now owning
near Phalen Park. Aside from my professional duties
during the daytime, I am a graduate student in the
Masters of Public Affairs program at Humphrey
Institute at the U.

I look forward to the educating discussions, as well
as explanations about why a German bar should have an
English beer.
