Greens Team Up With Labor for Wal-Mart Month

In solidarity with the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Local
789, the Green Party of St. Paul announces its support for "Wal-Mart
Month", an entire month dedicated to organizing and educating the public
about the world's biggest and most-sued corporation.

"We will not stand idly by while Wal-Mart spends millions on defensive ads
that distort its despicable record on pitiful wages, union busting, sex
discrimination, and a host of other practices," said party co-chair Andy
Hamerlinck. "We're proud to tell the truth about Wal-Mart alongside the
UFCW and other unions fighting for a better life for working people".

In addition to supporting labor-led initiatives at Wal-Mart stores all
month long, the Small is Beautiful Committee of the Green Party of StPaul
is co-sponsoring a showing of the film "Always Low: What Happens When
Wal-Mart Comes to Town (Uninvited)", by local filmmakers (and Greens)
Elizabeth Dickinson and Ken Friberg. The showing will be Wednesday, March
9 at 7pm at the Communication Workers of America (CWA) Local 7200 in
Minneapolis.

It will be followed by a discussion led by Dickinson and UFCW organizer
Bernie Hesse. "Always Low is one of the best films about Wal-Mart,
period," said Hesse. "This film not only explains what's wrong with
Wal-Mart's practices, but shows the strong opposition right here in the
Twin Cities to the way they do business."

The following night, March 10, at 7pm at Roseville Area High School, the
UFCW and Friends of Twin Lakes will present "Stacy Mitchell: The Real Cost
of Big Box." Greens have worked closely with Mitchell, "a leading expert
on big box retail and its damaging effects on communities" on developing
legislative strategies to combat big boxes like Wal-Mart in our cities and
neighborhoods.

While the Green Party of StPaul continues to fight Wal-Mart locally, we
are also engaged in activities - such as helping to establish a Metro
iIndependent Business Alliance (MIBA) - that strengthen our local economy
and offer community-based economic alternatives to the Wal-Mart model.
Wal-Mart Month is an excellent opportunity to continue the conversation
about the kind of business practices we as citizens want to see in St.
Paul.
