You might have missed the part about "Crimes per 100,000 population." New York has 30 times the total population. Lets take your Aggrevated assault as an example. St Paul had 263,937 times 527.4 divided by 100,000 or 1,392 Aggrevated Assaults in 2001 New York had 7,746,511 times 527.7 divided by 100,000 or 40,878. One could claim as you seem to that New York is much more dangerous because 40,878 is much bigger than 1,392. This is at least as valid as claiming that it is much safer because the number who were not assaulted there 7,705,633 is much bigger than here 262,545. I'd say that the chance of being assaulted there 0.5277% is 1.00037936267 times worse than the 0.5274% here. I feel much safer.

These figures make defy anybodies common sense. I've attempted to copy the figures, but if they don't copy, here's the url for the website page in question:

Look at the aggravated assault figures. It says that you are just as likely to be assulted in a city with 7 1/2 million people as you are with a city of a 1/4 million people!
Car thefts? I suppose that 7 1/2 million people bought less cars that St. Paul's 1/4 million? Must not be many car dealers in NYC. I would guess from this that there is no traffic congestion in NYC either!
Look at the larceny figures. There's over 200% more larceny crimes going in St. Paul than in NYC. Unbelievable!
Women better move to NYC as rape in St. Paul is 400% higher than NYC Unbelievable!
From these figures, I would gather that we are reallya wild bunch in St. Paul and crime is running rampant. We better all move to NYC!
As long as this was posted on list, I will respond in kind. I would prefer the off list approach if only because the group has moved on to other things.

Mr. Hanson's self-proclaimed "common sense" tells him that crime on a proportional basis must be far, far worse in NYC than in lil ol down home St. Paul. When the facts as represented by the FBI's crime statistics say he's dead wrong, he asks us to believe his "common sense" rather than the facts. I think "Hanson sense" might be a better term for this than "common sense."
And, incidentally, St. Paul's higher car theft statistics make perfect sense, common or otherwise. You'll remember Mr. Hanson cited these as showing that the reported statistics must be wrong since they went counter to his own intuition. There's a simple and logical explanation for this. There are fewer cars proportionally in NYC than in St. Paul. It shouldn't be surprising to anyone with a grasp on reality that their would be propotionally fewer car thefts in NYC than in St. Paul.
Finally, I find nit surprising that an avowed anti-capitalist like Mr. Hanson would begrudge good union people like our policeman a living wage.
