I see in the newspapers that the bar owners are, again, bemoaning their fate as the so-called smoking ban goes into effect in Ramsey County. It's the same old goofy argument that government shouldn't be intruding on people's personal lives. The newspapers are going along with it lock, stock and barrel. They should be telling the story of the people who have lung disease instead of petting these merchants of death. I guess that we haven't forgotten that the government role and duty to the citizens is to protect their general welfare. The newspapers have forgotten it to! We, as citizens, simply are not experts in all things. We need a strong, vibrant parental government to protect us as a society, the same way it would act to protect us from invading forces. The newspapers should be telling it like it is instead of wiping the nose of the restaurant and bar owners. The truth is that we have simply too many bars and restaurants as it is. Probably 75% of them should closed down for good; however you will not find any of the major newspapers telling THAT truth! Isn't it amazing that you won't find the people who sell this "slow death" selling their products to themselves or to their loved ones? If they won't do that, why in the world should we, as a society, allow them to sell their products to ours? Here are some examples: 1. You won't find full-blown alcoholics selling booze. 2. You won't find emphysema / lung cancer victims selling cigarettes. 3. You won't find obese heart attack and stroke victims selling greasy grimy food. 4. You won't find compulsive gamblers owning casinos. The people who do sell this junk are just preying on the publics' naivete and they should be stopped! In fact, if we had a government, these people should be arrested and charged with 1st degree premeditated murder, because that's exactly what it is. That's the truth, if you can handle it. The newspapers should be able to handle it and they don't and you don't have to wonder why, as it should be capitalistcally apparent. Herbert Hoover said: "You know, the only trouble with capitalism is capitalists. They're too damn greedy." Capitalism needs very strict controls and the following article shows a starting point. http://www.multinationalmonitor.org/mm2005/012005/ruskin.html Rowdy Russ Hanson.
