Jim's reference to secession from the Republican-voting welfare states brings to mind the recent Strib article on home mortgage foreclosure. Guess what? The states with highest foreclosure rates are those with low taxes, low public services, poor education, poisoned environment and minimal welfare and medical care programs, AKA "red states."
And lowest foreclosure rates are generally in, you guessed it, the others. Of course, we profligate liberal spenders in St.Paul will pay for the conservatives' failure to honor their debts through higher mortgage rates. Well, at least with the new dike at "Millionaire Field", we can gain a little revenge by increasing the likelihood of devastating floods downstream in Bush country..... But dang! Of course we'll pay for that too in FEMA grants, since the "get the feds off our back" crowd will be all too quick to line up at the post-flood "gummint trough" to get their Cadillacs replaced and duck-hunting shacks rebuilt. OK, rant over.... Question: I know they trucked in lots of fill on which to build the new condo/townhome/apartment complex upstream from downtown. Are the garages, roads, apurtenances really high enough to stand above the next record flood that will be here next or 45 years from now? Shalom, Salaam, Peace ....
