The Minnesota Bicycle and Pedestrian Alliance is also giving away bikes for Bike to Work Week: http://www.bikeped.org/FullCycle/

I encourage anyone who wants to make the shift from car to bike to sign up!

Giving away bikes is great, but we know that just owning a bike does not mean that a person is going to use it to bike to work- all too many folks buy a bike with good intentions and then after meeting with a frustration or two, hang it up in the garage. So, we are going one step further and giving away full commuter kits (helmet, rack...) AND pairing each free bike with a Bike Mentor who will work with the recipient to find safe routes between home and work and to teach safe urban riding.

This bike give away is infact just one of many give aways for us.

* Two weeks ago we gave 15 bikes to start the Wellstone Bike Club on the Midtown Greenway: http://www.bikeped.org/MediaReleases/WellstoneClub.html
* This week we are dropping off 10 bikes for the New Directions School in North Minneapolis
* We are working with the Ordway Center to put on an Art Bike Parade which will end with over 50 kids getting free bikes
* Every week or two we drop a few bikes off at the Dorthey Day Center
* Next week the St. Paul Connections program (part of the School District) will be in the Sibley Bike Depot learning to build bikes which they will be able to keep.

The list goes on and on.... Please check out our website for more examples.

Note: we are a member supported volunteer based non-profit which does not (yet) receive any operating funds from government or large foundation donations. If you want to help build a more human powered future, please consider joining: http://www.bikeped.org/membership.html

Bicycling Magazine and Shimano are teaming up to give away 50 quality
commuter bicycles complete with bicycling gear on Bike Safely to Work Day,
May 19th, 2005. To enter to win, Twin Cities' residents have to submit a
50-word essay on how they would use the bike to get to work. Enter on-line
at www.bicycling.com/biketown -- the deadline of April 11th is fast
approaching. Participants must be at least 18 years old. Penn Cycle will
provide local support to the Twin Cities winners.

The bikes will be presented to the local winners at the State Capitol on
Thursday, May 19th, as part of Bike Safely to Work Day. Several organized,
group bike rides are being planned throughout the east metro that will
culminate in a major event at the Capitol. For more information about these
bike rides, go to www.sharetheroadmn.org <http://www.sharetheroadmn.org/>

Please feel free to forward.
