This Thursday, April 7th at 3 pm the Senate Transportation committee is
holding a hearing on the proposed transit system cuts (70% of routes would
be affected) and fare increases ($.25), and the Transportation Choices 2020
Initiative (University UNITED has taken a position in support of this bill).
At the Capitol, the Senate is the body most likely to protect transit this
year. The Senate must strongly support transit as it negotiates a final plan
with the House and the Governor. This is a crucial opportunity to show the
Senate how important transit is to our community. We need to pack the
hearing room to show broad community support for transportation choices and
demonstrate that we will not stand for these devastating cuts.
Where: Room 15 in the State Capitol. Room 15 is one floor down from the
street level directly below the capitol rotunda.
When: Thursday, April 7th. It will begin at 3 pm. Met Council Chairman Peter
Bell is scheduled to testify on the proposed cuts to service and fare
increases right before our portion of the hearing.
How: If you can attend the hearing please RSVP to Dan Walsh at 651-767-0298
or [EMAIL PROTECTED] so we know how many people are attending. He will
also outline further details about the hearing.
What: Sit in the audience and show support. You do not have to speak.
Transit for Livable Communities and a bi-partisan group of legislators have
introduced an historic solution called the Transportation Choices 2020
Initiative. It would prevent the current proposed cuts to the bus system,
complete a comprehensive transit system in the Twin Cities region by the
year 2020 and give transit a secure funding source to prevent further
service cuts.
This is our best chance to pressure the Senate to include elements of our
initiative in their transportation proposal.
