Why don't they just put a divider in the existing doorway and label one
half "IN" and the other half "OUT"? Voila!
And/Or don't bring anything into the cave/mine that can burn. If it's not
fire the marshal is concerned about but rather cave-ins and sarin gas
terrorism, how can they predict where someone might get trapped or gassed?
What were the circumstances surrounding the Battle Creek cave-in fatality?
Would another door have saved the lady? Would Jeanne settle for an egress
window instead of another door? What about a sprinkler system, which is
required in other, non-Jaycee places? What the hell is a Jaycee anyway?
I have just returned from a brainstorming session, and some of the rules
were:
there is no such thing as a bizarre idea
everyone is right
practice "green light thinking" (I'm not sure what that is, but I
think you just Go...)
instead of saying "that's stupid" or something, say "Yes, and..."
play off of others' ideas
blah, blah, blah
So, while I disagree with Jeanne about the general sensibility of this
idea, I do agree that the Jaycees 5-day monster event hardly warrants such
an extreme measure.

AM [StPaul] Build a new door
Apparently there is a plan afoot to "improve" on one of the sandstone
cave (mine, actually) that is directly across from Watergate Marina. It
was formerly used to store boats but no longer is. It is used 5 days
per year by the JCees for their Halloween spook house. Apparently the
fire marshal noted that there in only one way in and that is a fire
hazard. The spook house will not go foreword this year unless they
succeed in blasting through the sandstone bluff and creating a whole new
entrance to the cave. I guess the JCees are out writing grants to fund
the project. Interestingly, at the very time they are trying to prevent
erosion on the bluff and close caves in other locations, the city may be
willing to consider allowing the JCees to further deform the bluff in
support of a commercial fundraiser that lasts 5 days. I am not aware
that the city receives any benefit from this activity and am not aware
if or whether the parks department gets any benefit.
It would seem to me that preserving the bluff would take complete
priority over this type of activity and the city should not even begin
to entertain such a bizarre idea.
