Speaking of St. Paul's homeless population and the dismantling of the safety net by our state and federal governments, Randy Kelly is delivering his state of the city message at the Dorothy Day Center on Tuesday, April 26 at 5 p.m. His governor, Tim Pawlenty, has apparently decided it's time to solve the homelessness problem in Minnesota. This is the same governor who's throwing thousands of people off affordable health coverage through Minnesota Care, and the same guy who is cutting child care, public education, job training, Meals on Wheels, etc. etc. A building program to end homelessness is nothing different than the public poor houses that "solved homelessness" before the New Deal came along. A building program that doesn't attempt to reverse the root causes of homelessness is a sham.
