Don't Let Your Child Be Next
The Saint Paul Police Department recently issued Tasers to school officers
stationed in middle and high schools in Saint Paul. Tasers have been
implicated in the death of over 130 adults. They have never been tested safe
for use on children. Police are eager to use these weapons. Police around the
country have used and abused Tasers with disastrous consequences. A 16 year-old
lays in a coma in Chicago after having been Tasered. Since the 16 year-olds'
injury, Chicago has suspended the use of Tasers on children. Chicago-in
finding Tasers unsafe for children-joins other major metropolitan areas-with
presumably more disciplinary problems in schools than Saint Paul-that have
refused to allow the use of Tasers on school children. These cities include
New York, Detroit, and Minneapolis.
Tasers are barbaric. If they were being used on prisoners of war -rather than
school children-their use would be in violation of international law.

In addition to death, Tasers cause instant paralysis, debilitating pain, heart
failure, severe head and eye injuries, and permanent scarring. The dangers
that Tasers pose threatens the very nature of schools. A single fatality or
serious injury to one child, of course, would alienate many other children and
destroy any sense of security and the feelings of nurture that a student must
enjoy to excel in schools.
We also are concerned that the Tasers will be used disproportionately against
African American children. Predictably, the first child to be Tasered in
Minnesota was an African American child. A female, just 15 years-old. She was
Tasered multiple times after as she lay on the floor. Each Taser blast lasts
for 5 whole seconds (count it off) and floods the body with 50,000 volts of
electricity throughout the duration of the blasts.
