Before I give you the latest "acronym key," allow me to give my Community
Gardening input, and I'll try my best to be doubleplusunfunny.
Certainly one aspect of AIB in SP will be GRG. It is with GRG that I first
got in touch with my inner citizen, while planting trees at the first NSP
planting (Shepard Road/High Bridge) about 7 years ago. That grove is
already very nice and a source of great pride for me and my fellow girl
scouts. (In Nov 2001, I would go on to tell foresters in China about how
we do things in America, and they didn't laugh once. If I were to do it
again, I'd sing the "So this is Saint Paul!" song and THEN I bet they'd
laugh! And I'd end all my talks with candle-lighting ceremonies and see if
that would make them stop laughing and start crying, or just make them
laugh harder. Then I'd pray for them whether they liked it or not.)
Other GRG events aside, there are a few other plantings that stick out for
me, namely
1) the North High Bridge Park, where Joe has planted and nurtured
dozens of species of lilies (Lily Tomlin, Eli Lily, Lily Lake, Picalily,
Lily & Gish, etc.)
http://www.studygs.net/joe/highbridge/daylilygarden.htm
2) the hanging plants downtown, at the airport, and other places;
they make me happy
3) the empty pots down W 7th; they make me sad
4) the trees removed from Joseph's Coat; why?
5) the good response from SP Dept of Trees in removing offensive
gingko and replacing with "Hal" lindens
6) the community vegetable gardens around that we don't have in
our 'hood; they make me hungry
7) Como Park, as close to Kew Gardens as we'll get
8) the indoor plants at places like the old Khyber Pass; kudos to
the caretakers of these everywhere
9) Master Gardeners; they amaze me
10) compost; with all due respect to the easterly victims, I love
Pleasant Compost!
11) entire yards filled with poppies or other opiates; these people
should get a tax break for not having to mow grass
I still have Millionaire Birders on the brain, and have another idea to
make millions - wildflowers. If you've ever met someone from an Orchid
Society, you know how free with their money they are. Since our state
flower is an orchid (oh, btw, "Ladyslipper" in German is "Frauenschuh," so
he can sponsor my idea for $9MM.), I propose we plant an orchid garden near
the river, next to the Bocce Ball courts.
While on a botanical mission from God a few years ago, I uprooted about
three yellow ladyslippers from private propery near the Mille Lacs nether
regions (there were ceremonies held that made it all perfectly legit) and
replanted them in St. Paul. Now there are about 40 of them in this secret
location! I will bring 6 back to Mille Lacs and hold another ceremony for
their reintroduction to the wild (I just hope they didn't dumb down too
much after three generations in an urban environment, or suffer from petal
ethanol syndrome, not that they're in the West End, mind you!). These are
lovely flowers. People will pay good money to see them - for you, $5.
Imagine an entire garden of them! Have you ever seen a showy ladyslipper?
There are 30,000 species of orchids worldwide, and about 145 in North
America. Add to those trillium and all those lesser flowers and you've got
yourself quite a tourist fly-trap.
Part of the motivation for this comes from Ladybird Johnson, a fine
southern Democrat who is primarily responsible for the billions and
billions of blue bonnets, Indian paint, and other wildflowers along many
Texas roadways. Texan tourists flock to these flowers like 'dillos to
asphalt, spending loads of money along the way. There are more blue bonnet
festivals down there than you can imagine.
FYI, I am Park Steward for Bay Triangle, the "unpark," and am sort of Park
Partner, too. The first mission is to get some boulevard trees planted,
and then we'll do some other things like expose some old curbstones, put in
a path, hide the medallion, and then get fancy with public art and a new
name and stuff.
So, Flower Power, man! Wild flowers, of Forest Green, Iron Range Red, and
Wheat... Color me there, Pierre! Poppies, "for all my friends!"

Here in Dayton's Bluff some of the gardening efforts are because of
Friends of Swede Hollow, Upper Swede Hollow Neighborhoods Assn.,
Greening Dayton's Bluff (a Dayton's Bluff Community Council program),
and the Community Design Center.
The Community Design Center has a number of program that young people
learn about nutrition, planting, growing and selling vegetables that
they grow. They also have the East Side Youth Conservation Corps
that works on many greening projects including: Bruce Vento Nature
Sanctuary, Swede Hollow Park, Hamm Park and East 7th Street flowering
container gardens.

Anyone else involved in any "community gardening" projects in St. Paul?
If so, please tell us about them.
