Well, obviously Kelly's "Kumbaya" atmosphere of the State of the City address has disappated. But, let's be generous and take the Mayor at his word for just a moment. If Mayor Kelly is such a conscientious and vociferous advocate for GLBT St. Paulites, why on earth did he endorse GW Bush and sidle up to Governor Pawlenty, both leading political figures advocating arguably the most direct legal assault on gays and lesbians in years--a constitutional marriage amendment that would strip rights away from gay and lesbians?
Moreover, why did Mayor Kelly last year veto a City Council resolution condemning the marriage amendment? If the Mayor is indeed such a tireless champion of the GLBT community, Kelly's next public statement should condemn President Bush, Governor Pawlenty and their allies in the Minnesota Legislature and Congress for advocating the most hateful legislation that this state and the country has seen in years. Friends, after all, are honest with each other. Anything less will reveal Kelly's letter for exactly what it is: yet another example of staged indignation, and a shallow substitute for real action around issues that St. Paulites care about most at that. But, don't hold your breath... Erin Stojan Dayton's Bluff __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
