I join Tim in offering my sympathies to the SPPD and Sgt. Vick's
family and friends.
This shooting hits very close to home for me. The incident
occurred a block from my former Dayton's Bluff home. My travel to
work this AM was impacted by the condoned off area the police was
searching. Of course, its also less then a half mile from Sacred
Heart church where Ron Ryan was killed.

I don't know if others have heard this yet. I just happened to
catch
part of a press conference with Police Chief, John Harrington on
MPR.
Sgt. Jerry Vick of the SPPD was shot dead early this morning while
on
duty in the Dayton's Bluff area.
For me, this serves as a very brutal and stark reminder of the very
important, but dangerous work that our police are called upon to do
every day.
Most of us encounter the police doing crowd control at public
events
or political rallies or lying in wait for traffic violators in
various "enforcement" zones in the cities.
But, on a daily basis, they are also dealing with drug dealers,
prostitution rings, and gangs. Its dirty, difficult, and sometimes
very dangerous work.
My sympathies go out to those who knew and worked with Sgt. Jerry
Vick.

wide-ranging
manhunt through the Dayton's Bluff neighborhood, where a vice
officer
working undercover was shot dead early this morning.
Officers dressed in camouflage could be seen going door to door as
a
National Guard helicopter hovered overhead.
Sgt. Jerry Vick was pronounced dead at Regions Hospital, Chief John
Harrington told reporters during a news conference. Vick had been
shot in an alley near Seventh and Forest Streets after exchanging
shots with two suspects outside Erick's Bar around 2:20 a.m. The
alleged gunmen fled on foot."
