It was discussed in January already.
In short, initial suggestion submitted to the list was to add
m4_ifdef([AM_SILENT_RULES], [AM_SILENT_RULES([yes])])

My first idea was to add
m4_ifdef([AM_SILENT_RULES], [AM_SILENT_RULES])
instead, thus keeping default behaviour unchanged.

Later we agreed to just require the automake version that
has the macro.
