John Muir wrote about those axel nuts too. Seems they're universally
difficult. His book, published in the early seventies was How to Keep
Your Volkswagen Alive, A Guide For the Complete Idiot. Lacking an
impact wrench and having tried the heat and the solvents and the
breaker bar and everything else he made the following recommendation
which worked very well, thank you. Take a cold chisel and aim it in
the appropriate direction at one of the corner tips on the axel nut.
Bang on it until loose. Works like a charm although it leaves the nut
looking like a mechanical squirrel chewed it up. But hey, if you ain't
got the tools to do the job right, and you still need to get the job
done, you do what ya gotta do. At least it worked.
