will this work?it's a response to "someone stole my imac and i see them trying to launch ichatT"
Set up a new AIM account, login to it and add your old screen name as a buddy. Launch Terminal from the Utilities folder. Type in: netstat -n DO NOT HIT RETURN YET. Make sure you aren't doing anything else on your network. Turn off your email client, close your web browser, no streaming audio or video, etc. You want your computer to be "network silent" other than AIM (iChat). Prepare a large-ish (at least 5-10MB or so) file attachment. Doesn't matter what it is but name it something juicy like "Heather & Nicole at the Beach" or something. Basically, you want to entice the person to accept the download. Then, wait. The next time you see your old screen name appear, immediately open a chat with the person. Pretend that you're a friend and say something like "Hey John, here are those *nice* pics of Heather and Nicole I was telling you about before." (Substituting your real name for "John" of course.) Then, before the person can do anything else, send that file. HOPEFULLY the person will accept the transfer. WHILE THE TRANSFER IS HAPPENING, jump back to Terminal and hit RETURN. You'll see a bunch of active internet connections with one column named "Send-Q" and another column named "Foreign Address". If your computer is "network silent" then all the numbers in the "Send-Q" column should be zero - EXCEPT ONE. That one is the person receiving your file. Look under the column "Foreign Address" to get that person's IP address. At that point I'd suggest aborting the file transfer and immediately log off AIM to give the impression that you're having internet problems. The other person won't be able to restore your file so he won't know that he's been set up. You can now use that IP address to find out what ISP the person is using and, with any luck, get a rough geolocation of the person. At that point I'd suggest going to the police with that information and have them investigate. -- "...don't tell them anything! they haven't even tortured you yet!" TRAC!
