Because if if the US Government comes out loud and hard on the matter,  
this will tend to re-unify the iranian people around their government.

You may have forgotten, but the Iranian people certainly haven't  
forgotten that the LAST time they had a free and open democracy, the  
US destroyed it and installed the Shah for nearly 30 years of  
repression and brutality.

Then came the revolution and the US stood on the side of the Shah.

Ahmedinijad got elected the FIRST time, in no small part, because of  
Bush's cowboy rhetoric about 'Axis of Evil'. Before that stupid-ass  
speech, there was a growing thaw between Iran and the US.
