(Note: the prisoner reclassification scheme that allowed the AZ DOC to put
violent felons into this medium security prison was written by the last
legislature and guided by Jan "the Accidental Governor" Brewer's staff, several
of whom have financial ties to the private prison industry.)

jaw-dropping post-escape review inspection of the private prison in Kingman, AZ
where the three inmates escaped last month before going on a multistate crime
spree including murder.

among the more stunning findings:

"COs even in the days following the escape failed to detect tracks or challenge
team member's presence on the perimeter."

"The malfunctioning alarm system has lead to desensitization to alarm
activations. Staff assume it is just another false alarm."

"The Armory was out of compliance in several areas. Ammunition and inventory
deficiencies were noted."

The report then refers you to a detailed appendix where you find it is just
about as scary as it seems:

"No master inventory is maintained in the Armory or where weapons are stored.
They utilize a "Daily Armory Inventory" which only provides you with what is
currently in that area."

Yep, they could *lose weapons* and not know about it...

Staff are supposed to only ever take home a 'hot box' key, which is a key that
unlocks a locker containing the actual keys to the facility, which is under the
supervision of other COs.

Well, except for transportation staff, whose "Take Home" set includes the
"Belly Chain Padlock" key *for the entire complex*. Staff who are, btw, almost
all with less than a year's experience and are dramatically underpaid compared
to DOC State Corrections Officers.

Read the whole document for "How not to run a prison, asshats!"

This is beyond negligence, and verges on felony murder, imo.

But our taxes are low! Gummint is the problem not the solution! That's all that
matters!

I'm sure the magic of the free market will weed out the inefficient private
prisons.

Everyone who dies as a result are just the unfortunate few who are in the wrong
place at the wrong time. They shoulda shot first, anyhow.
