Our own governor reigned mid-term, but that's because she was appointed 
Director of Homeland Security. Arizona's actually has a string of 'em in recent 
years, due to deaths in office, appointments to federal positions or 
impeachment, but to be perfectly honest no governor I know quit for no 
particularly rational reason. 

(her stated reason that she couldn't govern because of the ethics 
investigations made no sense whatsoever, but it certainly made her persecution 
complex quite clear. Also, the fact that almost the next day she announced 
lucrative book deals, talking engagements and TV plans made it painfully 
obvious that at least in part, she quit to cash in. An admirably capitalist 
thing to do, not so admirable in a public servant.
