The list has descended into an unacceptable level of personal insult, ad hominem attacks and generally uncivilized behavior.
This has lead to people dropping off the list; losing a valuable diversity of voices here. We (the list administrators) wish to stop this, and so are instituting some rules. I propose we move to a new standard of 'passion, not vitriol'. This is not to say that I am advocating some pseudo-civility "let's be nice kumbayah and pretend we don't disagree" mode, lets just act like: "This list is a discussion in the kitchen while the party is going on in the living room. If you wouldn't say it in the home of a friend, don't say it here." Lets stick to facts and debate, and if insults must be thrown, let's at least rise above the 7th grade: <http://www.webinsult.com/> Failure to abide by this convention henceforth will result in the offender being put on probation and their posts being moderated with the possibility of their not being allowed to be sent to the list members. Continued violations will result in the offender being banned from the list. This meta-discussion is not up for debate, as this list is not a democracy but Ian's benevolent, absolute dictatorship.
