An older Gateway laptop that was just brought in for fixing, boot from a cd to nuke&pave and the dos prompt com,es up:
"Press any key to bomt from a CD/DVD" when the character generator in the video card has started going, you know it's not going to end pretty...and it didn't. After re-installing windows, the system would boot up to the login prompt, turn black then randomly display parts of the login screen in odd colors, go black and then display other parts of it in odd colors, ad infinitum.
