Current US debt is 14.3 trillion dollars. Amount accumulated under GW Bush alone: 6.1 trillion...43% of the total. This is what happens when you put wars and tax cuts on the credit card. We had a budget surplus in 2000. Instead of paying down the debt with it, GWB and the Republican Congress decided to go party with the money. Even if you subscribe to the erroneous view that the government should run it's budget like a family does*, that's the equivalent of spending money left over from your needs on clothes and new TeeVees instead of paying down your credit cards.
