They've developed materials that will emit precisely tuned wavelengths of light 
when heated; mated those with photovoltaic cells to produce electricity.

One of the uses suggested is for this to be part of a RTG generator for 
spacecraft...couldn't this be put to use scavenging energy from the 'will 
continue to be at boiling temps for hundreds of years' nuclear waste?
