Yep, that's what the 'Archive Mailbox' command is for.

You cant then browse the archived emails without re-impoirting them or not.

However,  the mail archivesare stored in .mbox format, so you can use mhonarc 
<http://www.mhonarc.org/>, Mac installer here 
<http://liepins.org/en/mac/mhonarc/> in conjunction with MacMhonArc 
<http://liepins.org/en/mac/macmhonarc/> to create web-browseable archives; burn 
those to cd or dvd and you're set. 

We're doing this to archive folks mail here when they leave or need an easily 
accessible archive that can run off of the storage media.
