I use rsync to keep files in sync between my iMac and my MBP, which is a free
unix util bundled in OS X.
Before I go on a work trip, my iMac has the most current data. I will consider
it the source of my data, and will use rsync to "pull" the data over an SSH
connection from the target (MBP). This assumes that the SSH port (22) is open
in your firewall settings on the iMac and Remote Login is enabled in Sharing.
Be sure to run the following command on the machine you want to OVERWRITE DATA
ON. This is a destructive process, I'm not responsible for you running this
the wrong way.
I'm going to use 10.0.0.1 for the iMac and 10.0.0.2 for the MBP in my example.
Any data that exists on the MBP that matches data on the iMac will not be
overwritten by rsync, but any differences between the two will.
Make sure iTunes is not running on the MBP.
In Terminal.app or iTerm on the MBP:
$ rsync -avz -e ssh 10.0.0.1:/Users/PutYourUsernameHere/Music/iTunes
/Users/PutYourUsernameHere/Music/iTunes/
Note that the remote path does not have the trailing "/" on the path, but the
local path does. This is not a typo.
If your path has a space, you will need to encapsulate the remote path with " "
and escape the space on the local side. ie:
$ rsync -avz -e ssh 10.0.0.1:"/Users/PutYourUsernameHere/Music/iTunes Library"
/Users/PutYourUsernameHere/Music/iTunes\ Library/
I don't use this process for iTunes, so you may need to do a little more to get
iTunes to display all the songs you transferred over, but this will do the
brunt of the work to get the data in place.
Once the two are in sync, you could buy/rip music on the MBP, and just as
easily pull its updates to the iMac by using the above command on the iMac with
the MBP's 10.0.0.2 IP address.
If you have any questions, please ask before running this, as you can easily
lose data if you use rsync incorrectly.
