Christians must choose between faith or worldly relevance
"Christianity never had an emperor cult,"

ORLY? "Christs Representative On Earth" ring a bell?

" but between Constantine’s rule in the 300s and the revolutions of the late 18th
century, churches held a prominent rank in their societies largely thanks to civil
government’s patronage. Religion was honored in the public square—and incorporated into
politics."

Say WHAAA? Civil governments 'patronage'? Religion wasn't "honored" in the
public square, religion was the only acceptable expression of the public square.

I thought he was being pretty generous there

Henry VIII had to found his own damn church to get a divorce. He was the first
King to assert that he had authority in his country above that of the Church.
EVERYWHERE ELSE the civil government only ruled with the consent of the Church.

Did Henry really put the state before the church or just make himself head of 2 things?
