I guess the recommendation on apps depends what kind of stuff you want to do. I never play games on the computer but suddenly I am enamored of Draw Something. Coz I like to draw. Something. I paint with two apps, Sketchbook Pro and Brushes. Sketchbook more versitile and brushes with a simple, intuitive UI and a playback feature. Even though iPhone 4S has built in HDR I use an app called True HDR. I'm still using Giffer Pro quite happily for little animations. AutoStitch for stitching photos. I don't think I had to pay extra for iPad Snapseed. I've had fun with Groupshot, Tide Graph app and also Grog Knots.
