The driver for the scanner, or software, or whatever could distinguish 
separate items so I just laid out all the photos face down and did one scan 
for all.  Each came out an individual file.  Before that I did one scan and 
duplicated it then cropped it in half. then erased opposing halves.  Then 
duped those, and etc.

If I had to do notes on the back as well, I'd take a photo of all the 
photos laid out face down on the scanning bed.  That got all the notes. 
 After the scan, I carefully turned them all face up and shot a picture of 
all the photos face up.  These two photos made an easy way to match up the 
information written on the back with the photo on the front.  

The information on the back didn't have to be hi res scans, just readable. 
 I hope this helps.  Oh, and Brain is right, Lightroom is the warez to uze.
