How do any of these whackjobs get any attention? Look at who their audience votes into office? At the local coffeeshop last fall, I sat near a chatty woman who informed me (without being asked or encouraged) of all sorts of dire warnings about how the election was going to impact us all, complete with a huge liberal outcry when they learn that all their "facts and fact-checking" (said with disgust) were wrong and Romney was our president. Rioting in the streets, breakdown in society, etc. She told me how god was very disappointed in the US, and that's why we were experiencing natural disasters; definitely not any of that "climate change-y stuff" - she went on and on. I tried a few non-confrontational things to see if there was any chance her I/O ports might be salvageable, and concluded that she couldn't receive any new data from outside her preferred channel. As my friends joined me, I thanked her for the conversation before turning away, and she said she hoped we could pray together sometime. I chuckled and told her to go ahead without me, since I'm an atheist, and btw, if that was intended as an invitation, thanks but no thank you, I'm straight. While she was turning purple and speechless, I wished her well and said I hoped the shock wouldn't be too hard on her when she discovered that her perceptions about the US turned out to be false. After the election, I didn't see her for about a month, and when she showed up again at the coffeeshop, she looked pale and shaky, and had lost some weight (that last part is probably healthier for her) but when I greeted her, she turned away. We see each other every so often at that same place, and she barely acknowledges me, but then again, she's also taken to wearing a tiara, really plunging necklines and singing torch songs on karaoke night, so I'm ok with not interacting. She's a fine example of someone who would relish that story and repeat it as absolute fact. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "StrataList-OT" group.
