The artist sent me another file & it worked fine.
Using the more command showed the same as before, tho.
He saved from his laptop the second time (first time on G5 minitower)
so problem solved till he sends the next file.

I forget if I asked this before.
A guy using Pshop CS3 emails me jpgs and I get the message
"Could not complete your request because an unknown or invalid JPEG marker type is found."
using Pshop cs 5.5
He's doing a Save As

Any ideas what would be causing this?
This looks helpful <http://voices.yahoo.com/how-fix-invalid-jpeg-marker-not-valid-photoshop-7420332.html>

I use terminal and do 'more <filename>' to look at the file directly. Lots of times you'll find that it isn't actually a .jpg file.

You should see something like this:

more Bq8nCbzIYAAjruB.jpg
"Bq8nCbzIYAAjruB.jpg" may be a binary file. See it anyway?
<FF><D8><FF><E0>^@^PJFIF^@^A^A^@^@^A^@^A^@^@<FF><DB>^@C^@^H^F^F^G^F^E^H^G^G^G

You want to see 'JFIF' in that first line.

If you see something more like this:

more acacia.psd
"acacia.psd" may be a binary file. See it anyway?
8BPS^@^A^@^@^@^@^@^@^@^C^@^@^F^@^@^@^H^@^@^H^@^C^@^@^@^@^@^@n<B6>8BIM^D^D^@^@^@ ^@^@+^\^B^@^@^B^@^B^\^Bx^@^_ ^@8BIM^D%^@^@^@^@^@^P<FB> <A6><BD>^GL*6<9D><8F><E2><CC>W<A9><AC><85>8BIM^D$^@^@^@^@^]D<?xpacket begin='<U+FEFF>' id='W5M0MpCehiHzreSzNTczkc9d'?> <x:xmpmeta xmlns:x='adobe:ns:meta/' x:xmptk='XMP toolkit 3.0-28, framework 1.6'> <rdf:RDF xmlns:rdf='http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#' xmlns:iX='http://ns.adobe.com/iX/1.0/'>

It's a mis-labelled .psd file.

Also, you can try stripping the .jpg off of the file name and throw it at Graphic Converter...that program has always been good at guessing formats via file headers.
