They thought they were getting away with it, that's scarier than the fact they 
beat the crap out of the guy...which means they've probably gotten away with it 
in the past.

This is something that Carl Hiaasen would reject as too darkly comic to put in 
a novel. Kafka would have gone "Naah, I'll just make him wake up as a 
cockroach!"
