from my friend Larry Yates:

I had forgotten the immense philosophy
Of the Messengers
Of inexorable Blakey
But I have known this melody most all my life
I had forgotten that in self chosen flame
A Tunisian began the Arab Spring
I have known this profound courage
All my life
Though at a distance
I used to pass the Tunisian Embassy
On Mass Ave in DC
And I would whistle this melody
Half game half hope of meeting
But I had forgotten
I heard a jazz player I knew
Noodling the tune once and I named it
He was amazed that I'd heard it as a child
And have known this melody
All my life
I have never seen Tunisia
Did not see deaths in a museum
>From a foreign plot
Do not know the Messenger by name
Would not know the coast
Of the Continent
Night in Tunisia
Night in Virginia really
I sit perforce
In the intent audience
Amazed that I had forgotten
The immensity and philosophy
But glad to have at least
Not forgotten
The melody
