As noted further along by Ben in that thread, you can modify the values in the map (but not the map itself). Gregg also suggested another solution: use JavaScript to trim the input in the form before it is submitted. In the past I've used a simple Filter with an HttpServletRequestWrapper. Like Tim said, this is for when you want to trim ALL input parameters. This is strictly Servlet API, nothing Stripes-specific. Alan, your best bet is likely to use a @Before BindingAndValidation method to go trim the value associated with your username parameter in the request parameter map.
